MS Seven Seas Navigator - Maiden Call in Antwerpen

EN: MS Seven Seas Navigator of the American luxury cruise company Regent Seven Seas Cruises was docked in Antwerp for the First time on Monday 25 September 2017. It was also the first time a ship of the cruise line visit the city.

Van Sovjetmarine tot cruiseschip / From Soviet Navy to Cruise ship

EN: At First glance the ship does not seem like anything special, but it does have a rather interesting history. MS Seven Seas Navigator was launched in 1999 by Radisson Seven Seas Cruises, which later changed into Regent Seven Seas Cruises, but the building start of the vessel was already in 1988. At that time it was not the intention to build a cruise ship. That year the keel was laid in Leningrad (now Saint-Petersburg) in the Soviet Union for a ship called ‘Akademik Nikolay Pilyugin’. The ship would be used for tracking satellites, but was never completely finished. The ship was 90% completed when they had to stop working on it by government orders.

In 1977 the ship was bought by the company V-Ships and was renamed to ‘Blue Sea’. After that the ship was transferred from Russia to Italy, where the T. Mariotti yard stripped the ship of its upper structure and started to rebuild it as a cruise ship. The rebuild was finished in August 1999 and MS Seven Seas Navigator took to the sea.
